Transfers of personal data from the EU in 2020

Robert Bond (robert.bond@bristows.com) is Partner & Notary Public at Bristows LLP in London, UK.

By the time you read this article, we will know the future of the United Kingdom in terms of its membership in the European Union or otherwise! When the UK leaves the EU, it may not immediately be viewed by the EU as an “approved” country to receive transfers of personal data from the EU, and this will have an immediate impact on multinationals with entities in the UK and the rest of Europe.

During 2020 we also expect to receive the decision of the European Court of Justice in the case between the Data Protection Commissioner of Ireland versus Facebook Ireland Limited (the Schrems II case).[1]
