RFI on PEPPERs, CBRs Is Sign They’re ‘One Step Closer’ to Returning

In a sign that the Program for Evaluating Payment Patterns Electronic Reports (PEPPERs) and Comparative Billing Reports (CBRs)—two free compliance monitoring tools—may soon make a comeback (with changes), CMS is reaching out for ideas on improving them.

A new request for information (RFI) asks hospitals and other stakeholders to answer questions about PEPPERs and CBRs, including their presentation, accessibility and data utilization.[1] The responses are due Aug. 19.

PEPPERs and CBRs disappeared late last year, with CMS saying on its website that there would be “a pause” in the reports through the fall of 2024 while it updated and improved them.[2]
