A federal district judge in Georgia has ordered Charles Adams, M.D., and his medical practice to fork over $27 million for violating the False Claims Act (FCA), the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia said Oct. 12.[3] Adams was found liable for submitting false claims by a federal jury in June in connection with chelation therapy reimbursements. Adams and his practice, Full Circle Medical Center, billed Medicare for medically unnecessary uses of chelation therapy. “The jury found that Medicare reimbursed the defendants more than $1.1 million for these unnecessary treatments,” the U.S. attorney’s office said. “In a post-trial ruling, the federal district judge added penalties to the jury’s verdict, bringing the total amount owed to more than $27 million.”
