American Senior Communities LLC (ASC), which provides skilled nursing and long-term care services in Indiana, agreed to pay $5.591 million to settle false claims allegations over Medicare claims for therapy services provided to patients on hospice, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana said Aug. 10.[1] The settlement stems from a whistleblower lawsuit filed in 2017 by a former employee of a hospice services company doing business with ASC. The complaint alleged that ASC “was charging Medicare directly for various therapy services provided to beneficiaries who had been placed on hospice, when those services should have already been covered by the beneficiaries’ Medicare hospice coverage,” the U.S. attorney’s office said.
