Key Pieces of the Risk Assessment, Audit Process

The Office of Billing Compliance at Penn Medicine in Pennsylvania uses a risk assessment process with a risk ranking guide to assign a numerical score to areas in the risk universe, according to Karen Smith, vice president and billing compliance officer at Penn Medicine, and Amber Farkas, manager of government audit and appeals.[1] Five factors are individually scored and the final score determines whether a risk area lands on the billing compliance work plan.
