First lawsuits filed using Title III of the Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity Act of 1996

Beginning May 2, U.S. citizens are entitled to sue entities in Cuba for “trafficking in confiscated property claimed by United States nationals,” pursuant to Title III of the Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity Act, also known as the Helms-Burton Act of 1996. Already, U.S. citizens and companies have taken advantage of President Trump’s decision to allow for the lawsuits to file in U.S. federal and district courts.
