Thousands of ships reportedly using scrubbers to displace pollution

An investigative report[1] by IndependentUK found that ships installing “scrubbers” in order to comply with International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements to reduce sulphur emissions are merely shifting the pollution from the air to the sea: “[S]ulphur emitted by the ships is simply re-routed from the exhaust and expelled into the water around the ships, which not only greatly increases the volume of pollutants being pumped into the sea, but also increases carbon dioxide emissions.”
