Recently I received an inquiry from a reporter doing an investigative piece on a hospital. As usual, I told him that I don’t comment on specific cases, since I would rarely have sufficient information to do so, but that I’d be happy to direct him to the rules. His question involved a possible conflict of interest that I could see easily raising a major red flag but yet also not falling neatly into a clear pass/fail classification based on existing rules and guidance issued by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office of Inspector General.
