U.S. Medical Management LLC (USMM) and VPA PC (VPA), which provide home-based health care services, have agreed to pay $8.5 million to settle false claims allegations in a case that was set in motion by five separate whistleblower lawsuits, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan said Oct. 8.[1] USMM and VPA allegedly submitted claims to Medicare for lab and diagnostic testing services performed between Jan. 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2015, that “were not reasonable and necessary for the diagnosis or treatment of an illness or injury,” the U.S. attorney’s office said. USMM and VPA didn’t admit liability in the settlement.
