Metroplex Pain Consultants LLC and Dr. Steven Casey in Dallas, Texas, have agreed to pay $110,748 in a civil monetary penalty settlement with the HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG). According to the settlement, which was obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, OIG alleged that Metroplex and Casey (together, the respondent) submitted claims to Medicare for services that were false or fraudulent and “represented a pattern of billing for services that lacked medical necessity.” OIG alleged that from Oct. 3, 2016, through Feb. 28, 2017, Metroplex submitted 668 claims for services supposedly provided by Casey at a time when Casey was not at his office due to a medical condition. Also, OIG contended that from Feb. 6, 2017, through Dec. 28, 2017, “respondent submitted 135 claims to Medicare for spinal facet joint injections, which amounts exceeded five in a rolling 12-month period.” The respondent didn’t admit liability in the settlement.
