A San Francisco, California, rheumatologist has agreed to pay $1.033 million to settle false claims allegations over billing Medicare for drugs and associated services that were not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California said May 24.[1] Dr. Roger Wang allegedly “injected into his patients versions of Synvisc, Synvisc One, or Orthovisc that were not approved by the FDA for distribution in the United States and therefore were not covered by Medicare, and billed Medicare for the drugs and injections,” the U.S. attorney’s office said. He did not admit liability in the settlement.
