◆ William Beaumont Hospital, a hospital system in the Detroit area, agreed to pay $84.5 million to settle a false claims lawsuit stemming from alleged violations of the Stark Law and Anti-Kickback Statute, the Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan said Aug. 2. The case centers on alleged improper relationships with eight referring physicians, and involved hospital “compensation substantially in excess of fair market value and free or below-fair market value office space” to secure physician referrals, DOJ alleged.
