Ethics: A higher standard?

I was recently one of several compliance professionals interviewed by Bruce Weinstein for a Forbes piece on the differences between compliance and ethics. Among the questions posed was whether ethics holds us to a higher standard than compliance does. As expected, most people concluded that ethics is a higher standard. But I took the position that they are two different matters entirely, and comparing “standards” was impossible, sort of like comparing sports statistics from two very different eras.
