Greeks and Romans were two of the few cultures in antiquity that consistently portrayed spatial depth. But during the Middle Ages, this understanding of perspective was lost in virtually all of Europe. During this time, artwork such as portraits, paintings, or reliefs could be summed up in one word: flat.
