CMS: Measures Are Coming in IPPS for 'Birthing-Friendly' Hospitals

The proposed 2023 inpatient prospective payment system (IPPS) regulation will have a measure for rating hospitals on how “birthing friendly” they are, according to the deputy director of CMS’s Center for Clinical Standards and Quality. The regulation is due imminently.

“A hospital designation will be coming forth for hospitals that are birthing friendly,” Jean Moody-Williams said March 29 at the Health Care Compliance Association’s Compliance Institute.[1] “CMS is working with external stakeholders to create a hospital designation that captures hospital maternity care quality and outcomes, with the goal of displaying it in a user‐friendly format on the ‘Care Compare’ website.” Moody-Williams urged hospitals to “keep an eye on the IPPS rule” and comment on the proposal.
